Community Energy has been a part of the UK’s energy strategy since 2014 following shifts in government policy and legislation. Policy only invites mountains to move but doesn’t actually cause them them to do so. According to our project partner Regen, the more recent Net Zero Strategy published in 2021 mentions community energy 17 times and yet little of practical use to support widespread adoption despite the myriad good reasons to embracing it into the country’s energy mix. One could wonder if this nudges the definition of ‘lip service’? But it’s not all bad – there are some excellent models for community energy happening across the UK and of course in many other countries where such innovations are allowed.
If you’re involved in any kind of innovative energy project or are focusing on energy in your creative work, or are intellectually exercised by the challenges we face in moving a reluctant or perhaps just conservative unwilling-to-change society away from convenient and ubiquitous fossil fuels for better, cleaner and in most cases cheaper alternatives we’d really love to hear from you.
Our next publication On a day like today we just need to look forward explores questions like these. One of the things that makes an art.earth book is a diversity of opinion, thought, or practice. This book embraces a host of ideas including climate change, climate justice, climate remediation, climate politics – how we live, how we consume and source energy, and how communities or individuals can be empowered Impacts go well beyond the human, of course: we want to hear from the living planet not just from the species that dominates it.
